Two of our most popular titles, Backyard Brighton and Backstreet Brighton, are now available for the first time in a single volume.

This new edition combines two books which gather together photographs and reminiscences based on material gathered by Brighton Borough Council with the intention of creating a record of houses scheduled for demolition during the 1930s, and again in the late 1940s and early 1950s.

Originally produced in collaboration with the Lewis Cohen Urban Studies Centre, these books incorporate photographs taken by the Environmental Health Department of  now-demolished streets and houses in Brighton.

Each photograph is accompanied by reminiscences of families who lived in the houses, offering a fascinating insight into the lives of working people from the ’30s to the ’50s, and a unique record of areas of Brighton long gone.

A4 format, 148 pages, soft cover, illustrated with B&W photographs throughout.
